This weekend Introduction to Black and White Wildflower and Macro Photography Course has been designed for photographers who are either thinking about making black and white wildflower photographs for the first time, or have decided to devote more of their photography to black and white and want some in-depth tuition to take their creative photography on to the next level. It will also suit photographers who want to explore the fascinating techniques involved in close-up and macro photography.
This course is suited for photographers who are primarily looking for creative and compositional input into their photography, plus they also want to learn how to use a macro lens successfully. This means you'll get the most from the course and enjoy it more if you already have an understanding for how your camera works in terms of aperture and shutter speed and the relationship between them; also about what depth of field is, plus the white balance and ISO settings.
You will need to be familiar with your laptop and be able to work your way around either Lightroom or Photoshop in terms of knowing how to access, rename and store your images. You'll also need to be able to transfer your photographs from the camera on to your laptop and then transfer them on to a memory stick for the review session.
You will be asked to convert your RAW photographs to black and white for the review, although on this introductory level workshop don't worry if you have not learned how to do this yet as I will show you how.

We are based in Reeth in the heart of Swaledale, North Yorkshire.
On both Saturday and Sunday we’ll start at 9.30am and finish at 6pm.
The course begins with guidance on how to develop an eye for what does and doesn’t work as a black and white wildflower subject. Next comes tuition out on location on compositional aspects specific to black and white photography, both traditional and abstract. You will also gain an understanding for the techniques needed for using a macro lens successfully.
The group size is never more than five photographers, whereas other courses, workshops and tours often have many more. This smaller group size means you will receive more personal tuition out on location, plus we can visit more varied locations and have more elbow room when we get there. At the location you'll not line up to take the same photograph as the people standing next to you; instead you'll be encouraged and shown how to develop your own creative style and make photographs that are unique to you.
During our time together I work as hard as I can to create a fun and inspiring experience, while also providing photographers with a structured framework for instruction and learning. This means you will learn as much is possible during the course and leave feeling that you have developed significantly both your vision and the creative style of your photography.
Also included in the course fee is unlimited follow-up email and telephone advice. It's a combination that has been successful over the last 12 years, with a substantial number of photographers returning for further courses at different destinations, some for a fifth and sixth time as they look to develop their skills further.
Yes. It’s not easy to be objective about your own images, so one of the main ways to improve as a photographer is by putting yourself back into the position of the viewer and looking at other photographers' work. This also gives you the chance to put into practice what has been learned when we head back out again.
The majority of my time out on location is spent working alongside each photographer giving tuition on a one-to-one basis. As part of that teaching process, I use my camera as a practical way of demonstrating the compositional and technical process I go through to achieve my photographs and to also illustrate a location’s potential.
Either a digital SLR or digital compact system camera with interchangeable zoom or prime lenses: wide-angle and telephoto. Ideally you will also have a macro lens, but it’s not essential.

Most of the walks to locations are short and on the flat, although some of the places we visit are away from the main paths and sometimes this means the terrain will be uneven or boggy and occasionally uphill.

The course was more than value for money. If you compare similar courses and workshops, as I have, you will find that the cost of a Garry Brannigan course is one of the most reasonably priced, and having experienced other photography courses, Garry’s is by far the more superior.
